Metamorphosis - live animation for Dekoor in TivoliVredenburg

In July 2025, I created live animations for Metamorfose, the concert by vocal ensemble Dekoor, performed in the main hall of TivoliVredenburg, Utrecht. Using two vintage overhead projectors — the kind many remember from school — I animated the stage in real-time with sand drawing, colored filters, photo transparencies, ink, some puppetry and various handmade materials.

This analogue projection technique brings a tactile, playful, and transparent quality to the visuals: the audience not only sees the final image, but also how it comes into being. The images responded to the shifting moods and harmonies of the choir, transforming throughout the performance like a visual echo of the music — a continuous metamorphosis.

This was a very different project for me — normally I perform for intimate audiences of 30 people, not 1,500. I was both excited and a bit nervous, but pleasantly surprised by how the handmade, tactile atmosphere translated even in such a large venue. It turned into a full-on explosion of color, movement, and light — a celebration of visual storytelling that I will definitely carry forward in my future work.

I have a background in animation, but discovered my love for performing visual work live. Working with musicians is especially inspiring to me. In this collaboration, live visuals became a scenography that evolved along with the voices — ephemeral, layered, and alive.
